The stamp of reality

The more you looking at life and observe it closely, the more you understand that there is nothing to be understood. Life is just flow of events and the mind is desperately trying to connect patterns and find the meaning.

Poor people do not care about the meaning of life. When survival is at stake, when the events of each day carry a sense of urgency, life's meaning is irrelevant. The question of life's meaning is considered a philosophical question and such questions are considered weird, difficult, grandiose and irrelevant.

Thinking about life's meaning seems a useless exercise. People often take that the meaning of life involves some kind of joke, they respond with nervous laugh and an attempt to change the subject. To some, this question is threatening, too unnerving to dare to say anything sincere or serious and so laughter seems the only safe response.

People investigate life because they are dissatisfied with it. They see that life is empty and monotonous, they do the same thing over and over again, they want something more, something beyond that which already is. The everyday life is empty, dull, meaningless, boring and intolerably stupid so people say the life must have a fuller meaning.

Life might be just chaos, the sum total of different events. Disorder. After a lot of thinking the logical answer for the question is that meaning has to be imposed on life, it is not built in. They say the meaning of life depends of what you make of it. Sounds right.

For me life did not exists until my mother met my father. My life started with my birth and it will go on until my death. Life is just time between birth and death. So the literal meaning of life is time. So if life is time, the way to have a happy life is to use time wisely.

Time is always in the present moment. Past and future are not time, they are imagination. People live for future but too much "future" leads nowhere. Too much "future" take present away. The future doesn't exist, being focused in the future is not answer of true happiness.

Living in the past is by far the worse place where you can place your attention. To remember your past is to live it over and over again. Keeping your life in the context of the past, you'll not move at all.

Surely, the memory of an event cannot pass for the event itself. Nor can the anticipation. There is something exceptional, unique, about the present event, which the previous, or the coming do not have. There is a livingness about it, an actuality; it stands out as if illuminated. There is the ‘stamp of reality’ on the actual, which the past and the future do not have.

What gives the present that 'stamp of reality’?

There is nothing peculiar in the present event to make it different from the past and future. For a moment the past was actual and the future will become so.

What makes the present so different?

Obviously, my presence. I am real for I am always now, in the present, and what is with me now shares in my reality. The past is in memory, the future - in imagination.

There is nothing in the present event itself that makes it stand out as real. It may be some simple, periodical occurrence, like the striking of the clock. In spite of our knowing that the successive strokes are identical, the present stroke is quite different from the previous one and the next - as remembered, or expected.

A thing focused in the now is with me, for I am ever present; it is my own reality that I impart to the present event.

But we deal with things remembered as if they were real?

We consider memories, only when they come into the present The forgotten is not counted until one is reminded - which implies, bringing into the now.

Things and thoughts have been changing all the time. But the feeling that what is now is real has never changed, even in dream.
